A "Mounting" Problem (Motor Mounts)

Posted July 29, 2020 7:15 AM

You know how heavy your engine and transmission are, so you can imagine how tough the parts that hold them onto your vehicle's sub-frame must be.  Not only must they support the weight, they also have to isolate vibrations and noise from the passenger cabin.  Pretty tall order, wouldn't you say?

The parts that face that task daily are called the motor mounts, or engine mounts.  They are usually made of rubber with steel brackets.  Others contain a liquid for vibration and sound isolation.

Most vehicles have three or four motor mounts, and while rubber or hydraulic liquids do a good job of damping the vibrations from the engine, they also have their limitations.  The problem with rubber is that it gets old and brittle.  Plus, if there's an oil leak anywhere in your engine and oil gets on the rubber motor mounts, rubber will deteriorate even more quickly.  As for the liquid motor mounts, they can develop leaks and stop working.

Here are signs a motor mount is going bad.  You may hear a loud clunking or banging sound under the hood.  That means the weight of the engine is shifting around enough to bang against other metal parts.  You may feel bad vibrations, and the engine may feel like it's moving around in a strange way.

When things get to that point, your vehicle can be damaged from that heavy engine knocking against things, and its time to replace one or more motor mounts.  Schedule a visit to your vehicle service facility. There, a technician will assess your motor mounts; if one bad one is found, it's not unusual that others are likely to fail soon and should be replaced before they do.

Because all vehicles are configured differently, some motor mounts are easily replaced.  But others can be much trickier, take a lot longer and therefore are more expensive to replace.

It's important for your engine's health to make sure motor mounts are sound and solid.  You will maintain that quiet, vibration-free ride and could save your engine and transmission from major wear and tear.

Brake Service at AutoChoice Service Center Inc. in Bloomington

Posted July 12, 2020 9:57 AM

Brakes really aren't optional equipment for Bloomington drivers' vehicles. And taking care of them isn't optional either.

A regular brake inspection is on every Indiana  driver's vehicle maintenance schedule. At AutoChoice Service Center Inc., our team will check your brake system and let you know if there are any problems. Of course, if you're having trouble with your brakes, get your car into your Bloomington service center right away. And watch out for these problems:

  • Low or spongy brake pedal
  • Hard brake pedal
  • A brake warning light that stays on
  • Constantly squealing or grinding brakes
  • Vibrations or clunking sounds when you apply your brakes

There are two types of brakes: disc and drum. Disc brakes have a rotor that's attached to the axle. Calipers straddle the rotor, kind of like the brakes on a bicycle. Drum brakes are more common on back wheels. Pads, called shoes, push against the inside of the drum to slow the vehicle.

There are several things that need to be serviced on the brake system. First, the brake pads and shoes wear out with use and become too thin to really help. If the brake pads wear away completely you can damage the rotors. The calipers can grind grooves in the rotor. Then the rotor must either be resurfaced or replaced, and that can be expensive. But putting it off is dangerous because your vehicle won't stop as quickly. Sometimes rotors warp or crack and must be replaced.

Brake fluid is also important. When the brakes are applied, the pressure in the fluid activates the brake pads or shoes. Not enough fluid, not enough pressure to brake properly. Also, water builds up in the brake fluid over time, which leads to corrosion, leaks and brake damage, and with hard use, the brakes could severely fade or even fail. Bloomington  drivers should change the brake fluid when their vehicle manufacturer recommends it.

Be sure to properly maintain your brakes because it's a lot cheaper than paying your nearest Bloomington area body shop after an accident.

Reviews

I had my car in a while back for brake work and once again I was extremely pleased with Auto Choice. They are professional and honest (a rare combination) and I know that the work will be done correctly. I drive a Subaru and I completely trust my technician Jake to diagnose and expertly correct any issues that come up. I definitely will be back the next time I need anything car related. Thank you Jake and Auto Choice!

My son attends IU and his older car needed an urgent repair. The nature of the repair made it impossible for him to drive the car home and have our usual shop work on his car. Trust is a big issue when choosing a repair shop. The team at AutoChoice Service was professional and thorough in making their recommendations. They advised what repairs were urgent and what items could be delayed for the time being. Their quote was fair and detailed. The job was completed on time. I highly recommend AutoChoice.

Brought my car in thinking it was burning oil, because that's what Jd Byrider told me. They fixed 3k worth of things within a week. So glad I decided to get a second opinion, will definitely be going here from now on since I know now they take my warranty! Also fixed whatever was causing it to pull to the left, Bell Tire couldn't even do that. 10/10 recommend.
